Hemant Joshi, a Sculptor and Teacher from Udaipur, shares his reflections on the occasion of Teachers Day, drawing from his long years of experience in teaching.
He begins by saying that teaching is indeed a noble and fulfilling profession, but over the years, he has realized something crucial—that every child is born with a special talent, and it is the responsibility of teachers to identify and nurture that talent from the very beginning. Alongside regular studies, equal attention must be given to skill development, because he has seen many students drop out of school midway. Such children, he emphasizes, must not be left behind. Instead, teachers and schools must help them develop skills that can empower them to stand on their own feet, become independent, and make progress in their chosen fields of work without being dependent on others.
Educator Hemant Joshi stresses that schools should have a structured arrangement from the very beginning, particularly for each child, to identify what they are good at. He suggests that children should be introduced to at least 5 to 10 different skills through proper planning. Their classes should include demonstration sessions, where experts are invited to showcase and teach practical aspects of different skills. Through such exposure, he says, children will naturally develop curiosity, discover their abilities, and realize that they, too, can try something new and excel at it.
He proudly shares that such efforts are already being implemented at Government School Varda, where he has been actively involved with the effort. As a result, there has been visible change—children are now more engaged, asking questions, showing curiosity, and even moving to different schools to explore new opportunities. This progress, he admits, is not easy, especially given the lack of facilities, but he believes that if teachers take genuine interest, this work can be carried out effectively.
He concludes with hope that the government and other institutions will also extend their support in this important mission. With dedication from teachers and proper guidance, children can discover their talents, strengthen their skills, and step forward toward a brighter future.
