Gracing Gyan Manch, Mukesh Gurani, the CEO and Co-Founder of Reemaz, a fashion Boutique in Udaipur, shares fascinating insights into the rich heritage of Tangliya Fabric Arts in India.

India stands out globally for its diverse range of fabric arts, with each state showcasing unique textile traditions. Mukesh Gurani highlights that Tangaliya Fabric Art, a 700-year-old craft, is practiced primarily by the Dangasia community from the small village of Bajwa in Gujarat’s Surendranagar district. Today, only a handful of families continue to preserve and practice this exquisite art form.

Tangaliya Fabric Art has recently gained global attention after Hollywood star Brad Pitt was seen wearing a Tangaliya shirt. This moment brought widespread recognition to the craft, making people aware of its authentic and rich heritage.

Mukesh Gurani explains that Tangaliya fabric is woven with precision, where the measurements of warp and weft threads are carefully measured to create intricate designs. The delicate patterns often depicting flowers or peacocks or other designs are formed by tying fine knots by hand during the weaving process. This handcrafted art demands immense patience and dedication, as any mistake is difficult to correct.

A few years ago, Tangaliya Fabric Art was primarily used to create shawls and textiles. Today, its exquisite patterns adorn sarees, suits, women’s attire, and shirts as well.

Boutique Owner Mukesh Gurani points out that only a handful of artisans continue to practice this art, which has prompted the Government of India to promote and preserve Tangaliya Art. To protect its heritage, the fabric has been granted a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, confirming its origin from a specific region.

Currently, many designers are embracing Tangaliya, using pure handloom cotton to create stunning, authentic pieces that celebrate this traditional art form.
